에든버러에서 태어나 자랐으며 현재는 북런던에서 가족과 함께 살고 있다.
대표작으로는 『영국의 왕과 여왕들(The Kings and Queens of England)』, 『실종자들(The Disappeared)』, 『배반자와 변절자들(Traitors and Turncoats)』, 『대탈출(Great Escapes)』, 그리고 진귀한 사실들의 연대기 『지루한 부분이 빠진 역사(History Without the Boring Bits)』, 『지루한 부분이 빠진 과학(Science Without the Boring Bits)』 등이 있다. 현재 방대한 분량의 『스코틀랜드 관용구․설화 사전(Dictionary of Scottish Phrase and Fable)』을 편찬 중이다.
